Honor the Earth: Impacted Nations: a traveling art show: Artists: Nadema Agard

One of four in the Parfleche Visions Series, this piece is entitled Parfleche Visions of Eternal Birthing and is indeed a symbol of heaven and earth. Parfleche is a format that is traditionally done on rawhide by women of the Lakota and other Indigenous Nations of the Great Plains of what we call Turtle Island. They are used to record the cosmic truths or laws of the universe. The metallic colors represent the minerals of the earth that are ravaged by mining and other destructive and desecrating acts.

Together the four pieces represent a mutual respect and reciprocity between heaven and earth and all dualities. In addition, they embody balance and harmony which are symbolic of both a past and future positive alternative for environmental salvation.

The invasion and destruction of our environment is a result of the lack of mutual respect and reciprocity (for what you take you give in return). The inspiration for this series and this particular piece are those basic principles of survival manifested visually in these works. I consider making this work as an act of resistance.
