Honor the Earth: Grants: How We Raise Money For Native Communities: Collaborative Philanthropy: Aveda Earth Month 2006

Honor the Earth is pleased to announce that we are again partnering with Aveda for Earth Month 2006. This year, under the motto Save Plants. Save Yourself, Aveda and their 24 conservation partners are joining efforts to save threatened and endangered plants. Last year the Aveda network helped raise over $80,000 for Honor the Earth alone – and over $1 million for all the conservation partners combined. During April 2006, your donations, a portion of proceeds from Appointments for the Earth at participating Aveda salons and 100% of proceeds from Aveda’s Light the Way™ candles will help Honor the Earth continue to support grassroots Native groups working on the front-lines to protect the land and their cultures.

With Aveda’s help last year, Honor the Earth was able to award grants to 11 grassroots Native groups working on a broad range of critical issues including restoration of sustainable agriculture, protection of medicinal and sacred plants, re-introduction of traditional foods to combat diabetes, and defense of their human right to maintain their traditional way of life. Our Aveda grantees included:

Peta Wakan Tipi, St. Paul, Minnesota
White Earth Land Recovery Project, Ponsford, Minnesota
Sicangu Way of Life Project, Whitewood, South Dakota
Indigenous Stewardship Model, Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota
Standing Rock Diabetes Program, Fort Yates, North Dakota
United Tribes Technical College, Bismarck, North Dakota
Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska
Eyak Preservation Council, Cordova, Alaska
Gwich’in Steering Committee, Fairbanks, Alaska

Congress is trying to dismantle the Endangered Species Act, a law essential to the protection of endangered plants and animals. Sign Aveda’s petition.
