Yucca Mountain
Yucca Mountain sits in Newe Segobia, Western Shoshone territory, and has long been sacred to the Shoshone and Paiute peoples. The Shoshone call the mountain Serpent Swimming West and speak of its constant movement. In just the last 20 years, the area has experienced 621 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or higher and is crisscrossed with 33 faults and seven cinder cone volcanoes. For several decades, Yucca Mountain has been the federal government's favored site for a nuclear waste dump despite its spiritual and cultural significance to local tribes and despite the science that indicates that the area is unsuitable for long-term storage of radioactive waste.
